I'm a beginner in Investing! What is best brokerage firm to use?

Main Post:

I currently use TD Ameritrade and want to start investing at least $500/month. I hear TD ameritrade is on the high side for fees. Can I do better?

I'm mainly looking at Mutual like VOO or VTI as I'm interested in dividends.

I welcome all opinions and hope I posted this in the right section! BTW, long time fan of this subreddit and really love this community.

Top Comment: Td is decent, most people here use fidelity swab or vanguard, if you want to follow this philosophy you need to create a three fund portfolio (fidelity: FSKAX - US stocks, FTHIX- international stocks, FXNAX- total bond) this would be an example of a fidelity three fund portfolio, as for TD not sure if you can buy partial shares of investments, that is is why I chose fidelity. VOO and VTI are ETFs, VOO tracks the S&P, while VTI tracks all US stocks, you would want to pick one of these to be the US portion of stocks in your portfolio, I prefer total market because the small and mid cap, but either way VOO or VTI will work.

[Westhead] A market research firm working w Hockey Canada is asking parents and others to complete a survey addressing HC’s sexual-abuse scandal. One question asks if respondents agree or disagree with this statement: “The level of criticism by the media towards Hockey Canada is overblown.”

How to market a consulting firm?

Main Post:

Hi all - to kick off 2024, I am reassessing our marketing plan. We are a small (~30 people) B2B management and strategy consulting firm. We've done well over the last 20 years. Our marketing has primarily been content - email, blogs, speaking. We do some (but need to improve) our relationship marketing. Most of our leads come from return clients and referrals.

I want to start with a “beginner’s mind.” What is the best way to market a professional services firm in 2024? Is traditional content marketing still the best place to focus? Should we get into videos or a podcast? Sponsorships and ads? Is there a best way to market expertise?

Thanks.

AI will Significantly Reduce the Job Market for Lawyers in the Near Future

Main Post:

If ChatGPT or some other major generative AI model gained access to WestLaw's or Lexis' database, it would significantly cut the amount of time spent on legal research (which is 31% of the work new associates do) overnight.

You could ask ChatGPT: "I have a case about X and am trying to argue Y. Find me a case that sets Z precedent."

Yes, you would still have to read the case to ensure it actually sets the precedent you need and isn't a bunch of BS. But this is far faster than using WestLaw/Lexis's crappy search bar, reading through a bunch of cases, and hoping to find the precedent you need to advance your legal argument.

No, not all lawyers will be replaced. An AI lawyer isn't going to go to trial in front of an AI judge anytime soon. But most legal work is done at a desk behind a computer, and this legal work is susceptible to being streamlined, or possibly even completely automated.

Much of the work that lawyers do will become far more efficient, and this won't even require additional advances in AI (simply access to WestLaw's database would do this). With upcoming advances in AI, it's quite likely legal drafting, document review, and other time consuming tasks will become more efficient as well (though probably not completely automated).

Top Comment: Hahahaha (guessing you haven't tried the fustercluck that is the Westlaw AI Research Assistant). Every week, there's someone claiming AI will take lawyer jobs. It'll affect the industry, sure, but it will not replace lawyers.
